Azkaban is a wizard prison located on a remote island, where wizards who have committed a severe infraction of the law are confined.
The wizard prison has not been directly shown in the movies,
but Hagrid is briefly imprisoned there in Chamber of Secrets after being falsely accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets. Sirius Black is the first wizard to escape the prison in Prisoner of Azkaban.
Azkaban is similar in name and history to the infamous Alcatraz prison, located in the San Francisco Bay. Both prisons are on an island, jailed criminals that committed the worst crimes, and were thought to be escape proof.
