Hedwig is Harry Potter’s loyal Snowy owl. The name Hedwig means “refuge in battle.” Though Hedwig is a female snowy owl, the owls that portray her in the Harry Potter films are male.
Snowy owls are known for their distinct characteristic of hunting during the day unlike most other owls which are typically nocturnal.
